James E. Riley, Jr. is “of counsel” to Barron & Stadfeld. Mr. Riley has been representing plaintiffs and defendants in complex civil litigation in state and federal courts for over 30 years. He serves as regional defense counsel in civil litigation matters for a number of nationally known self-insured corporations. He is also “of counsel” to Canepa & Vidal, a Santa Fe, New Mexico law firm, which represents numerous municipalities, as well as the State of New Mexico's Risk Management Division. Attorney Riley's main office is in Walpole, Massachusetts.


Mr. Riley is Board Certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (1999 - present) and has completed the Harvard Law School Mediation Training Program (October 2004). He serves on the National Arbitration and Mediation Panel.

  • $1,200,000 settlement in medical malpractice case involving heart valve problems caused by diet drug Fen-Phen. Client died from unrelated cause (cancer) prior to settlement
     
  • $1,000,000 settlement in civil rights case involving a police chase resulting in death of an innocent motorist
     
  • $585,000 settlement in medical malpractice case: Failure to adequately monitor post-operative complications in a neurosurgery patient
     
  • $400,000 settlement in medical malpractice case: Failure to diagnose colon cancer resulting in death of elderly man
     
  • $250,000 settlement in nursing home negligence case: Abusive and negligent treatment of an 87-year-old nursing home resident
